Su boca es circular, bordeada por labios gruesos, y se proyecta del frente. Alcanza los 60 cm de largo y los 6 kg de peso. Es la especie más abundante de la cuenca del Plata, llegando a constituir más del 60% de la biomasa de peces de la misma.
- 2(Alosa alosa) Pez de la familia Clupeidae. Antiguamente común desde Escandinavia hasta el Mediterráneo occidental, actualmente es raro en el norte de Europa y las Islas Británicas. Se considera extinto en muchos ríos europeos.
