A raíz de esta corriente se originó la llamada Reforma protestante. Entre sus muchos preceptos se encuentran el no reconocer la autoridad del Papa de Roma y buscar la única autoridad en la Biblia, la que puede ser interpretada por cualquier feligrés, razón por la que fue traducida a los idiomas nacionales; sólo mantienen tres sacramentos; los pastores (sacerdotes) pueden contraer matrimonio.
