Son plantas perennes que producen brotes nuevos cada año; presentan una roseta basal de donde surgen las hojas y los tallos florales, a cuyo extremo aparecen las flores, de cinco pétalos blancos, cinco sépalos y numerosos estambres. De la roseta basal surgen también otro tipo de tallos rastreros que producen raíces adventicias de donde nacen otras plantas. El fruto es en realidad un eterio, un engrosamiento del receptáculo floral, siendo los puntitos que hay sobre él los auténticos frutos.
