A mediados del siglo XVII su valor vino a fijarse en cuatro duros, lo que equivalía también a dos escudos. La población adoptó este nombre para toda denominación mayor a ese valor, por lo que habían doblones de a cuatro escudos, de a ocho, etcétera.
