Su hocico es alargado y puntiagudo, con orejas y patas cortas, provistas de fuertes uñas largas y encorvadas. Su pelaje es largo, tupido, de color negro en el dorso y la cabeza, con una franja de color blanco que recorre el cuerpo a ambos lados hasta la cola. Sus hábitos de vida lo hacen ser un animal nocturno, generalmente solitario. Es capaz de crear su propia cueva, aunque prefiere emplear las de otros animales. La característica esencial de este animal es, sin duda, el terrible olor que expele de sus dos glándulas anales como forma de protección.
