Posee hojas elípticas, algo apuntadas, a veces espinosas, duras, correosas, persistentes, verdinegras por la haz y más o menos blanquecinas por el envés. Produce florecillas de color verde amarillento y bellotas, dulces o amargas, según las variedades.
