Habita en manadas en regiones de climas tropicales y templados siempre cerca del agua en humedales del este de Panamá y en Sudamérica, al norte y oriente de los Andes, hasta el centro de la Argentina. Posee un cuerpo pesado en forma de barril y una cabeza pequeña, con un pelaje pardo rojizo en la parte superior del cuerpo que se vuelve pardo amarillo en la parte inferior. Pueden crecer hasta 130 cm de largo y llegar a pesar 85 kg.
