El género Althaea se diferencia de Malva y de Lavatera porque el calículo, que es un falso de cáliz extra que tienen las malváceas, tiene más de tres piezas. Esta especie es una hierba de ciclo anual generalmente de menos de un palmo de altura. Tiene unas hojas muy divididas en la parte superior y otras en la base que son redondeadas y débilmente lobuladas, éstas además tienen un largo pecíolo. Las flores tienen un hermoso color rosa liliáceo. Vive en pastos secos de plantas anuales y florece al final de la primavera.

Posee tallo hueco y estriado, manchado de color purpúreo en la base y muy ramoso en la parte superior; hojas blandas, fétidas, verdinegras, triangulares y divididas en gajos elípticos, puntiagudos y dentados de hasta 5 dm de largo y 4 dm de ancho. Las flores son pequeñas, de color blanco y surgen en umbelas de unos 10 a 15 cm de diámetro. Semilla pequeña de color negruzco.
