Tienen de 2 a 12 metros de altura, hojas lanceoladas a redondeadas, opuestas, coriáceas, de color verde oscuro, flores monoicas con ambos sexos presentes en el mismo ejemplar, poco vistosas. El fruto es una cápsula marrón o gris, de 0,5 a 1,5 cm de largo, normalmente coriácea, con numerosas semillas.

    (Buxus sempervirens) Arbusto o pequeño árbol siempreverde, originario de Europa y extendido hasta Asia Menor, creciendo en zonas de matas, colinas y otros terrenos secos y rocosos.
