También hay ábsides en los palacetes romanos (villae), sobre todo en las salas más lujosas, a menudo formando grupos de tres, dando a la habitación una planta de forma trebolada.

    En la arquitectura religiosa cristiana, es la parte de la construcción situada en la cabecera que cierra el presbiterio y se proyecta hacia el exterior de las iglesias, sobresaliendo del edificio.
