Where does harijan come from?
Borrowed from Hindi हरिजन (harijan, literally “Children of God”). Coined by Narsinh Mehta, a Gujarati Bhakti poet, in the 15th century and popularized by Mahatma Gandhi as an alternative to the term Dalit.
