Der Fluglotse überwacht den Luftraum und leitet alle Luftfahrzeuge in seinem Zuständigkeitsbereich, soweit sie seiner Kontrolle unterliegen, um Zusammenstöße zu vermeiden (Flugsicherung), aber auch, um für die Fluggesellschaften eine möglichst ökonomische Durchführung der Flüge herzustellen und aufrecht zu erhalten.
