El peso de los machos llega a los 10kg y en las hembras a la mitad, su plumaje general es negro con zonas de barras blancas con negro en el abdomen, parte de la cola y extremo de las alas; carece de plumas en el cuello y cabeza, en donde destacan las carnosidades de color rojo.
