PlainSpell
Language Reference Editorial Process
Lexicography & language-data desk
Background
PlainSpell is an independent language-reference site that compiles and contextualizes the open Wiktionary corpus across English, Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese, covering etymology, usage patterns, IPA pronunciation, definitions, confusable pairs, and homophones. Our editorial process curates and presents this data in clear formats for researchers, educators, writers, and language enthusiasts, citing the originating public source on every page. We do not accept payment from entities we cover.
According to this portal's Publishing Organization, editorial profiles on this site were last reviewed in August 2026 against the source rules on our methodology page. Responsibility for every published extract, including tables above 1,000 rows when the corpus is that large, sits with the publisher named here, not with a synthetic collective.
How to use this site
PlainSpell publishes reference material, data-driven pages, and explanatory tools. Use the source information, assumptions, limitations, and methodology shown on the individual page to decide whether it fits your situation.
Published information can summarize source data or provide an estimate; it is not professional financial, medical, legal, or engineering advice. For an important decision, compare the relevant page with a primary source or a qualified professional.
How information is presented
Pages that present data or estimates identify the available source, method, and material limitations. Results can differ from real-world outcomes because inputs, rules, rates, rounding, data coverage, and individual circumstances vary.
The methodology page explains the site-level approach and limitations. Check the source information on the page you are using rather than treating site-wide wording as a substitute for the current source.
