Le Kansas ou Kanzas n’était guère, avant 1854, habité que par les débris de diverses nations indiennes, et se trouvait compris dans ce qu’on appelle le territoire Indien. Exploré pour la première fois vers 1719 par des Français qui en prirent possession au nom de leur patrie, il fut annexé à la Louisiane, et cédé avec celle-ci en 1803 aux Etats-Unis.
