Es utilizado como mascota, quebrándole las alas, y defiende su territorio con picotazos contra cualquier extraño que se aventure. En Chile existe la subespecie Vanellus chilensis chilensis, que se encuentra desde Atacama hasta Chiloé, y el queltehue austral, más al sur.
