- 1(Typha spp.) Cualquiera de de unas pocas especies de plantas herbáceas acuáticas oriundas del hemisferio norte, y hoy distribuidas en buena parte del mundo. Son frecuentes en pantanos y humedales, formando densas colonias a veces impenetrables. Son anuales o perennes, de hasta 3 m de altura, con hojas lineares o subuladas, alternas, en la base de un único tallo floral desnudo; presentan rizomas superficiales que echan zarcillos, constituyendo éste su principal forma de propagación. Son monoicas, anemófilas, con floros aclamídeos que forman densos racimos en forma de espiga al cabo del tallo floral. El fruto es aqueniforme; las semillas tienen alrededor de 0,2 mm de largo, y se dispersan por anemocoria gracias a un vilano flexible y piloso. Sus hojas se usan para tejer cestos y para techar los ranchos.
