Es un poco mayor que el asno doméstico, alcanzando los 300 kg de peso y los dos metros de longitud, con las piernas un poco más cortas en comparación, el pelaje bayo o colorado, y una línea negra sobre la espina dorsal. Aunque se lo conoce también como asno salvaje es susceptiblede ser domesticado, y los sumerios ya lo empleaban como bestia de tiro y carga.
