Es una paloma silvestre que vive en la cordillera del norte de Chile entre los 2000 y 4000 metros, y en zonas similares del Perú y Bolivia. Tiene la costumbre de anidar en el suelo, contrariamente a las demás tórtolas que lo hacen en los árboles.
