En ocasiones forma bosques puros, pero es más frecuente que esté asociado al laurel y al lingue. Esta especie es el principal hospedador del hongo comestible digüeñe. Su madera se usa en construcción, como leña y para fabricar carbón. En Chile se llama pellín al árbol viejo, y hualle al árbol joven.
