Le styrax liquide est un mélange d’un hydrocarbure, le styrol ou cinnamène, pouvant exister également sous une forme solide (le métastyrol), d’acide cinnamique, d’acide benzoïque en petite quantité, d’une résine, la storésine, et de différents éthers, composés aromatiques dont le principal est la styracine ou cinnamate de cinnamyle.
Le styrol lui-même peut être utilisé, ou bien peut être polymérisé à des degrés différents de dureté. Les différentes formes de styrols peuvent être utilisées en combinaison appropriée, et le type préféré est la variété dure normale, dénommée alpha-méta-styrol, tel que décrit par le brevet français nᵒ 597842, du 1ᵉʳ avril 1925.
