Alcanza los 4 m de altura; es de hoja perenne, lanceolada, de color verde oscuro, con la copa densa y apretada. Florece a finales de primavera, dando flores hermafroditas de forma acampanada y color blanco, rosado o purpúreo. El fruto madura hacia mediados del verano; es una baya globosa, de color rojo intenso y entre 5 y 15 milímetros de diámetro.
