Son criaturas similares a minúsculos langostinos —de los que se distinguen por poseer agallas visibles—, con cuerpo dividido en tres segmentos, múltiples pares de patas, antenas táctiles y una cubierta quitinosa transparente. Son bioluminiscentes.
