From Middle English Pireneies, partly from Middle French Pyrénées and partly from Latin Pȳrēnaeī (montēs), from Ancient Greek Πῡρήνη (Pūrḗnē, “Pyrene”, literally “fruit-stone”), daughter of Bebryx and beloved of Herakles, and who, legend has it, is buried in the range.
