# morphogeny

> English word · Noun

## Definitions
1. The study of the evolution of forms by observing the supposed ontogenic recapitulation of that phylogeny.

## Etymology
Simplified learned borrowing from German Morphontogenie, itself from morpho- + Ontogenie; equivalent to a reduction of morpho- + ontogeny to morpho- (“shape”) + -geny (“origin”). The simplification means that the term is also used to translate German Morphogenie, the distinction between Morphontogenie and Morphogenie not being made in English.
