From German Katoforite, that from Ancient Greek κατώφορος (katṓphoros, “having a downward tendency”), from κάτω (kátō, “downward”) and φέρω (phérō, “to bear, carry”), referring to the mineral's volcanic origin. The suffix -ite was already used for other minerals.
